Appearing as a passionate and eccentric Titan researcher, Hange is one of the most significant characters in the manga and anime series Attack on Titan. She is a member of the Survey Corps, specializing in Titan research and crafting weapons to counter them. After Erwin's passing, command of the Survey Corps was handed over to Hange, making her the 14th leader of the force.
In the anime, Hange is portrayed with the appearance of a woman. However, Isayama-sensei revealed that he had no intention of disclosing the character's gender. In the manga, Erwin, Levi, and two others are the only ones privy to Hange's gender, as they have reviewed her records. Of course, Hange's parents also know her gender.
Hange witnessed her parents being consumed by titans. However, instead of harboring a vengeful grudge like Eren, Hange developed a peculiar "obsession" with these colossal creatures. Upon joining the Survey Corps, this obsession intensified, leading Hange to want to understand more about them, considering them "companions," and conducting research that not everyone dares to undertake. Even in her final moments, Hange still believed that Titans were truly fascinating.
For fans of Attack on Titan, you're likely aware of the numerous elements related to Norse mythology in the series. According to many fan analyses, Hange is thought to be a character inspired by Odin, the supreme god of Asgard. Hange shares similarities such as the missing eye, extensive Titan knowledge, and a calm and strategic approach—traits resembling the Norse god.
In the anime Attack on Titan Final Season Part 3 (First Half), released on March 4, 2023, Hange reaches the culmination of her story. To pave the way for her comrades to safely escape, Hange decides to use her own life to detain the colossal Titans. While Hange's death is heartbreaking, it becomes a necessary sacrifice to help Armin's group timely intervene and stop Eren.
