The Formosan black bear, an endemic species of Taiwan's Central Mountain Range, is currently facing the threat of extinction due to its dwindling population. Characterized by the distinct V-shaped markings on its chest, this bear holds a unique place in Taiwan’s natural heritage. To raise awareness about the importance of protecting this species, Paper Iconic is excited to introduce the Low Poly Formosan Black Bear papercraft project.

This papercraft project was developed by Stanislav Kulaev, based on the "Formosan black bear 3D model for print" by Amao Chan. What makes this model special is its articulated joints at the shoulders, hips, and neck, allowing for simple pose customization, along with a variety of interchangeable expressions. The Low Poly Formosan Black Bear papercraft requires 7 sheets of paper and measures W21 x H30 x D14 cm when completed. The template and instructions are conveniently packaged in a single PDF file.

Amao Chan shared that he created the original 3D model to commemorate the tragic story of a Formosan black bear named "mini three" at Shoushan Zoo in Kaohsiung. This bear was captured in a trap, resulting in the loss of its right front leg, leaving it with only three limbs, hence the name "mini three." Sadly, in December 2013, this bear was attacked and killed by another black bear at Shoushan Zoo, an incident that the zoo concealed for a month before releasing the news.

Conservationists have discovered several cases of bears missing toes or entire limbs, likely due to the animals gnawing off their own limbs to escape traps. While bears are not typically targeted by indigenous hunters in Taiwan, residents of the Pihao Payen village have accidentally caught bears twice in recent years while setting traps for prey like deer and wild boars. Hunting is a traditional practice in the indigenous cultures of Taiwan’s island inhabitants.

To reduce wildlife fatalities or injuries, the island's Conservation and Forestry Agency is currently urging hunters and farmers to adopt a new type of animal trap. This trap is designed to capture only smaller prey and not tighten to the point of causing limb necrosis.

Through this post, I hope to raise awareness about the need to protect the Formosan black bear, a precious symbol of Taiwan's natural world, and to encourage participation in meaningful projects like this Low Poly Formosan Black Bear papercraft.
