You may be wondering how jack-o-lanterns became so popular, or why we carve them out of pumpkins. To know the origins of jack-o-lanterns, we have to go to the fens, or marshes, of rural Ireland. According to legend, a man named Jack, known for his cunning and trickery, once tricked the Devil. However, when he died, he was not accepted into Heaven due to his sinful life, and the Devil, still harboring a grudge, did not let him into Hell either. Jack was condemned to wander the dark world with only a glowing ember from the Devil's own fire inside a hollowed-out turnip to light his way. He became known as "Jack of the Lantern" or "Jack-o'-lantern."
When Irish immigrants came to North America in the 19th century, they brought the tradition of carving lanterns with them. In the United States, pumpkins were more readily available than turnips, and they were larger and easier to carve. Thus, pumpkins became the preferred choice for creating Jack-o'-lanterns.
Over time, the tradition of carving pumpkins and placing them on doorsteps during Halloween became widespread in the United States. Jack-o'-lanterns came to symbolize Halloween, with people carving various faces and designs to celebrate the holiday and create a spooky atmosphere.
