Until now, Gear 5 has been the most notable and unique transformation of Luffy, opening up boundless potential for his strength. Possessing power that is fueled by the user's imagination, it aligns perfectly with Luffy in terms of both strength and significance.
In reality, the Devil Fruit that young Luffy consumed is the Hito Hito no Mi Model: Nika – a Mythical Zoan-type Devil Fruit. In this context, the Sun God Nika is revered as a deity of liberation for slaves and a bringer of laughter to humanity.
However, many might not be fully aware of the inspiration behind Oda's creation of Gear 5. Despite some fans' dissatisfaction, the majority of enthusiasts really admire Luffy's appearance in Gear 5, as it represents the true nature of Luffy – someone carefree and deeply devoted to freedom. Luffy loves helping his friends and always wants to bring happiness to everyone. That's precisely what Oda aimed for.
As Oda shared in an interview with Aoyama Gosho, Tom and Jerry served as the true models for Gear 5. Of course, devising the circumstances for the transformation into Gear 5 was a challenging task for Oda, but he managed to accomplish it. Following intense battles, Oda decided to inject an element of fun into the Wano arc, and that's how Luffy's Gear 5 came into existence. While Kaido fought with all his might, Luffy simply "played" with him. In this way, Kaido was no different from Tom the cat, always trying to catch Jerry the mouse, yet ultimately ending up being "played" by the mischievous mouse.
Fundamentally, Luffy becomes a character reminiscent of humorous manga. He embodies qualities similar to Tom and Jerry, cartoon characters that grew up during the childhoods of many. In simple terms, Luffy is carefree, doing what he needs to do and often acting foolishly in pivotal battles (though sometimes just as seriously).
